Upgrade/Jailbreak 3.0 or 3.0.1

I’ve had about 3 ipod touches and an iphone in the past 8 or 9 months but a friend of mine is still usiing the original ipod touch on the original firmware (scary, I know). What’s even worse? It isn’t jailbroken! So I told her I’d make her a video to show her how to upgrade and jailbreak it since I live about 8 hours away from her. I decided to post the video on youtube so other people who haven’t yet upgraded would have a step by step tutorial of how to do it. Also, for those who have an iphone on 3.0 software and are looking to upgrade to 3.0.1 firmware to protect against the SMS attack, this video also shows how to upgrade and jailbreak it. Windows 7 vs. Snow Leopard

We’ve all seen the Mac vs. PC commercials where Macs are always portrayed as better and faster and PCs are more affordable. In my opinion, Apple has been running the computer business for years but now the PC has a new weapon: Windows 7.

Both Windows 7 and Snow Leopard are set to be launched this fall and whether you’re a PC or Mac, I don’t think you’ll be too upset with your upgrade.

Anyone remember how excited people were when Vista was set to be launched? Probably not because after upgrading to Vista, most people were very disappointed. Vista was missing so many features that SHOULD have been added with the new OS. Luckily, I stuck with Windows XP.

Will Windows 7 be able to compete with Snow Leopard? It’s a possibility. Windows 7 is nothing new or fancy though. It is simply what Windows Vista should have been: better networking, prettier UI, and more space. Windows 7 also takes advantage of a better graphics card than did Vista.

Apple has also promised Snow Leopard will be “Faster to wake up, shut down, and join a wireless network.” It also frees up more space, allowing for more songs, videos, or photos.

Users will also see an improvement on both batteries but there’s really no comparison since all the new Macs are hosting larger batteries.

Both are also upgrading their media players. Windows Media Player is receiving a UI makeover and will be able to play just about any format. Quicktime may also play most formats but there has been nothing definite stated by Apple. It has, however, also gotten a new UI which is easier to navigate through. Users will now have the ability to trim clips and send them directly to youtube, mobileme, or itunes.

The main thing most of us are going to consider in upgrading: price. This is really almost no comparison. Apple is doing extremely well in the market right now so they are able to launch Snow Leopard at a low cost of $29 whereas Windows 7 Home Edition is listed for $119 on Amazon.

In my opinion, both OS’s will be a great upgrade to your system. They both have improvements that make them better than their previous version. So, if you’re tired of Vista or, like me and still running XP, now would be the perfect time to upgrade to Windows 7. You can pre-order on amazon.com but it will not be released until late October.

Will I be upgrading? Definately! But not to Windows 7. I’ll be buying a new 15″ Macbook Pro in September so I’m definately looking forward to Snow Leopard. My mom is, always have been, and probably always will be a PC so I’m sure she’ll be upgrading so I’ll more than likely be home from college a few times out of the year to play on her computer.

Easy Way to Redeem App Promo Codes

How many times have you been on twitter and someone is giving away free app codes but you couldn’t log into your itunes quick enough? I’ve done this plenty of times but Apple has made an update to the appstore. If you’ll go into your featured section and scroll all the way to the bottom, you’ll see a new area: Redeem. Now there’s no waiting for itunes to boot up to enter your app code, just go into your appstore on your ipod/iphone and type in the code before someone else does! Thank you Apple!

Wait…3.0.1 doesn’t fix SMS hack?

With the release of the 3.0.1 firmware to protect against the SMS hack, Apple has eased a lot of iphone-users’ minds. Unfortunately, a tweet from Dev-team developer, MuscleNerd, reinstated that fear. “Luis Miras and Zane lackey showed me some of their SMS hacks today. OMG 3.0.1 does not begin to fix them” was seen by all of MuscleNerd’s 32,350 followers and then re-tweeted.

The hacks that he was referring to are actually MMS hacks but also work through SMS. What’s more? It’s not just an iPhone flaw. They are able to hack into any GSM phone with MMS capability.

It is still trusted to update to the new 3.0.1 firmware if you are afraid of your phone being hacked but do realize that there are other threats lurking around that 3.0.1 DOES NOT FIX. Let’s just hope that Apple has heard this and is working on a few new firmware updates to decrease any SMS/MMS attacks on our precious iPhones.

New Iphone Firmware Fights SMS Attack

Yesterday, July 31, Apple released the new 3.0.1 firmware. With the widespread rumor of the SMS attack going around, Apple has released this new firmware that fixes the vulnerability in the SMS security.

Should you upgrade? The only new feature in the 3.0.1 firmware is the fix in the SMS security so if you are really afraid of your iphone being under attack or you actually did receive the “text of death,” then you should definately upgrade. Many of you, however, probably never received this text message or are not worried so I wouldn’t be too concerned with upgrading if I were you.

If you do decide to upgrade, it is capable of being jailbroken. Redsnow, which was released to jailbreak 3.0 firmware, also works for 3.0.1 so maybe that will help you decide on whether or not to upgrade. You will also use the same 3.0 IPSW when jailbreaking.

Iphone under attack…

Iphone under attack…..from a text message???

Many have been waiting to see what will happen to their iphone when today, July 30, came around. Will it be taken control over? Will it completely shut down?

If you haven’t heard about the latest iphone rumor, several weeks ago a developer found a flaw in the iphone’s security that would hackers to hack into someone’s iphone through a text message. Supposedly, if people received a text message with a tiny square your iphone had been hacked and the only way to prevent this was to turn off your phone immediately until the day was over.

Apple was warned about this flaw in the iphone a little over a month ago but has shown no attempt to fix this patch. Maybe it’s because Apple isn’t worried about this becoming a mass attack or maybe Apple just hasn’t figured out a way to fix this.

With all that being said, I would like to give my opinion. The only way for someone to send you a text message is that they must have your phone number. I don’t see how this would/could have become a large attack on the iphone without the hackers having your phone number. As of right now, I haven’t heard of anyone receiving this potentially hazardous text message but that’s not to say that it will not happen.

App That Rates Your Performance….In Bed!

While browsing around the net I came across a very interesting app that I decided to do a little research on. I do, however, find it quite odd that apple would allow such an app in the appstore but ban Google Voice…but that’s another matter.

Passion, developed by Chris Alvarez, scores your sexual performance. How? Well, it’s actually a really simple concept. While engaging in sex, just strap the iphone to your partner, keep it in your pocket(for those of you who have sex with clothes on), or simply lay it on the bed within a close proximity to your area. Then, follow the on-screen instructions, “You may start having sex.” (lol) It even gives you the option to submit your high(or low) score.

The app uses many of the distinct features of the iphone such as the microphone and the accelerometer to achieve an accurate (not sure how accurate) score. The scores are based on 3 basic criteria: duration(how long you last),activity(probably speed), and orgasm(no need for explanation).

The app will run you about $4.99 in the appstore. I couldn’t really find many reviews on the app because, as of right now, it only has 1 rating of 5 stars. Sure, I guess I could have tried it out and let you guys know how great or terrible it worked but unfortunately, I’m not some sex-crazed high school boy interested in my sexual performance. If any of you guys or gals try this app out though, I would love to hear your thoughts on it so please leave me a comment and let me know what you guys think of this app. I’ll post a few screenshots at the bottom of this article for you guys to get a visual picture of the app.

Is Apple controlling the appstore too much?

Just about everywhere on the net, you see someone commenting on Apple’s recently high disapproval rate for apps being released in the appstore.  Apple has always had certain restrictions but after giving GV (Google Voice) the boot in the appstore, there has been a huge internet riot against Apple.

In my opinion, I think Apple has gone too far in some cases. I know that their customers are in mind when approving/disapproving apps but after the statement that Google Latitude was “too confusing” really pissed me off.

Who do they think they are to decide what’s too confusing or simple enough for us? As if the iphone isn’t the most advanced smart phone on the market right now and we haven’t already had to figure out a lot of “confusing” things about it.

And what’s this about kicking GV out of the appstore because it uses some of the same features already on the iphone? Google has been one of the biggest and best developers for the iphone, especially with the native youtube app and search in Safari. It seems to me that Apple is being too restricting when it comes to the iPhone.  Think of it this way…what if we weren’t allowed to run google chrome or safari on our PC’s because it uses the same features as Internet Explorer. It wouldn’t make any sense at all.

Luckily, GV has been released in Cydia but what if Apple had succeeded months ago in getting jailbreaking illegal? We would be without this wonderful app that should have been kept in the appstore.  Stuff like this is what makes jailbreaking your iphone or ipod touch great because you can defy the man (apple) and still get their rejected apps onto your iphone/ipod touch.

Google Voice Now Available in Cydia!

So, I’m sure you all heard about how Apple kicked GV out of the appstore, right? Well, you know the hacking community is always ready to get back at apple and throw their limitations and restrictions back in their face. Of course, GV would be released in the Cydia store….FOR FREE!!! In no means am I taking responsibility for finding this app. It was news to me while browsing around.
